Welcome to the World of Bourke Parrots in NZ

Bourke Mutations in NZ

We have found that different countrys use different names for the same mutations.
The purpose of this page is to try and demistify colour names for New Zealanders.
The details are very basic, but hopefully easy to understand.

Cream Bourke Parakeet

Cream seems to be a local New Zealand term for fallow.
I have also seen creams called yellows.
They have pink eyes. There are light and dark varitions.

It is an autosomal recessive mutation, (like the white face mutation in cockatiels).

Cinnamon Bourke Mutation

Cinnamon Bourke Parakeet Mutation

Cinnamon bourkes can look very similar to creams.
They are however very different.
Cream or fallow is autosomal, but cinnamon is sex linked.
Cinnamons display no black colouring, the black is changed to cinnamon.

Rosa or Rosey, or
Opaline bourke parakeet mutation

Rosa, Rosey or opaline hen

Rosa, Rosey or opaline hen

Rosa appears to be a local New Zealand term for rosey or opaline.
Opaline is not a colour as such, It is sex linked feather pattern mutation.
In cockatiels it is called pearl.

Cinnamon/ Rosa or
Cinnamon/Opaline bourke mutation

cinnamon / rosa bourke mutation

cinnamon / rosa bourke mutation

Cinnamon/Rosa is the same as cinnamon/opaline.
It is two sex linked mutations combined.
They can look similar to pinks (below), but they normally have darker eyes,
and cinnamon cannot display black feathers.

Pink or Cream/Rosa or
Fallow/Opaline bourke mutation

pink or fallow / opaline bourke parakeet

pink or fallow / opaline bourke parakeet

Pink appears to be our term for a fallow/opaline, (Cream/rosa).
It has pink eyes. There are light and dark variations.

This is a combination of a autosomal recessive mutation (fallow or cream)
and a sex linked mutation (rosa or opaline).

Cin Ino bourke parrot mutation

lutino bourke parrot nz

cin ino hen

Ino is a term for another group of mutations. Cin ino, Albino, lutino, rubino etc.
Ino is a sex linked mutaion, but can be combined with other mutations, as in this bird- cin/ino.
To my knowledge, no one has produced an albino bourke yet.
